1. Workability Enhancers: Plasticizers & Superplasticizers
Water-reducing admixtures (plasticizers) disperse cement particles, improving the mix workability (slump) without requiring additional water, which would lower structural strength. Polycarboxylate ether (PCE)-based superplasticizers represent the high-performance tier of these dispersants.
Mechanism of Action
PCE molecules adsorb onto cement grains, inducing electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance. This releases entrapped water, permitting slump increases of 100mm+ at extremely low water-to-cement ratios (w/c < 0.35).
Primary Benefits
- Up to 30% reduction in mixing water requirements.
- Substantially increases early and 28-day compressive strength.
- Enables placement in densely reinforced structural sections.
2. Setting-Time Modifiers: Retarders vs. Accelerators
設定時間調整剤 (Setting modifiers) allow contractors to tailor concrete curing profiles based on ambient temperature and transport transit times.
Retarding Admixtures
Slows down the initial hydration process of cement. Essential in hot arid areas (like Gujarat summers) where quick initial setting causes cold joints during transport or placement. Uses sugars, acids, and lignosulfonates.
Accelerating Admixtures
Accelerates early hydration, causing rapid set times and early strength gains. Crucial for cold weather concreting, fast-track road repairs, or early formwork stripping. Uses calcium chloride or non-chloride salts.
3. Integral Waterproofing (Quick Touch Coatings)
To prevent water ingress and chemical attacks from water tables, integral waterproofing chemicals are added. These react inside the concrete matrix to block pores and capillary networks:
- Hydrophobic Pore Blockers: Liquid or powder compounds (often calcium stearate-based) that line concrete capillary walls with a water-repellent layer.
- Crystalline Active Sealers: React with free lime and hydration byproducts to grow non-soluble needle-like crystals, permanently sealing micro-cracks up to 0.4mm.
4. Admixture Performance Specifications
| Admixture Type | Standard (ASTM / IS) | Typical Dosage Range | Primary Objective |
|---|---|---|---|
| Superplasticizer (PCE) | ASTM C494 Type F / IS 9103 | 0.5% – 1.5% by weight of cement | High water reduction, extreme flowability |
| Retarder | ASTM C494 Type B / IS 9103 | 0.2% – 0.5% by weight of cement | Extend slump retention for hot weather transit |
| Accelerator | ASTM C494 Type C / IS 9103 | 1.0% – 2.0% by weight of cement | Rapid setting, early de-shuttering |
| Integral Waterproofing | IS 2645 / IS 5816 | 1.0% – 2.0% by weight of cement | Capillary pore blocking, water reduction |
Technical Dosing Notice
Over-dosing plasticizers or setting modifiers can result in segregation, severe set retardation (concrete failing to harden for days), or excessive air entrainment. Always perform trial mixes at site temperatures prior to bulk batching.
